JOINTS

● `color{violet}("Joints")` are essential for all types of movements involving the `color{violet}("bony parts")` of the `color{violet}("body.")`

● `color{violet}("Locomotory")` movements are no exception to this.

● `color{violet}("Joints")` are points of contact `color{brown}("between bones,")` or between `color{brown}("bones and cartilages.")`

● Force generated by the `color{violet}("muscles")` is used to carry out movement through joints, where the `color{violet}("joint acts")` as a `color{brown}("fulcrum.")`

● The `color{violet}("movability")` at these joints vary depending on `color{violet}("different factors.")`

● Joints have been classified into three major structural forms, namely, `color{brown}("fibrous, cartilaginous and synovial.")`

`star` `color{green}("Fibrous Joints:")`

● `color{brown}("Fibrous joints")` do not allow any movement.

● This type of joint is shown by the `color{brown}("flat skull bones")` which fuse end-to-end with the help of `color{violet}("dense fibrous")` connective tissues in the form of sutures, to form the `color{violet}("cranium.")`

`star` `color{green}("Cartilaginous Joints:")`

● In `color{brown}("cartilaginous joints,")` the `color{violet}("bones")` involved are joined together with the help of `color{violet}("cartilages.")`

● The joint between the `color{brown}("adjacent")` vertebrae in the vertebral column is of this pattern and it `color{violet}("permits limited movements.")`

`star` `color{green}("Synovial Joints:")`

● `color{violet}("Synovial joints")` are characterised by the presence of a fluid filled `color{brown}("synovial cavity")` between the articulating surfaces of the `color{violet}("two bones.")`

● Such an arrangement allows `color{violet}("considerable movement.")`

● These joints help in `color{violet}("locomotion")` and many other movements.

● Some of the examples are:

`star` `color{brown}("Ball and socket joint")` (between humerus and pectoral girdle),

`star` `color{brown}("Hinge joint")` (knee joint),

`star` `color{brown}("Pivot joint")` (between atlas and axis),

`star` `color{brown}("Gliding joint")` (between the carpals) and

`star` `color{brown}("Saddle joint")` (between carpal and metacarpal of thumb).

DISORDERS OF MUSCULAR AND SKELETAL SYSTEM

● `color{brown}("Myasthenia gravis:")` Auto immune disorder affecting `color{violet}("neuromuscular junction")` leading to fatigue, weakening and paralysis of `color{violet}("skeletal muscle.")`

● `color{brown}("Muscular dystrophy:")` Progressive degeneration of `color{violet}("skeletal muscle")` mostly due to genetic disorder.

● `color{brown}("Tetany:")` Rapid spasms (wild contractions) in `color{violet}("muscle")` due to `color{violet}("low" Ca^(++))` in body fluid.

● `color{brown}("Arthritis:")` Inflammation of `color{violet}("joints.")`

● `color{brown}("Osteoporosis:")` Age-related disorder characterised by `color{violet}("decreased bone mass")` and increased chances of fractures.

Decreased `color{violet}("levels of estrogen")` is a common cause.

● `color{brown}("Gout:")` Inflammation of joints due to accumulation of `color{violet}("uric acid crystals.")`
